3-0, 25:39, and a division game that will not care
Patrick Mahomes’ 20-of-24, 246-yard day produced a 24-10 win in Miami, but 88 rush yards and a lost possession fight are the tape that travels to the Raiders on Sun Oct 4, 3:25 PM CT.
Cold open“Twenty completions. Two Miami giveaways. And nine extra minutes that did not belong to Kansas City. The Chiefs are 3-0 — Las Vegas just inherited the film.”
DraftKings posting Chiefs -5.5 on a 45.5 total and ESPN FPI at 72.6 percent is a favorite’s number, not a coronation — Polymarket’s 8.6 percent Super Bowl price is what you get when a 3-0 team wins by 14 while losing first downs, third downs, and nine minutes of football.
What the tape said
A real review of the most recent result — not a box-score dump, and not a skip-ahead.
Kansas City scored on its opening drive, answered Miami’s 3-yard touchdown, and left Hard Rock Stadium with a 24-10 win that never became a track meet. Mahomes finished 20-of-24 for 246 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception; Walker carried 18 times for 70 and a score; Rashee Rice caught 7 for 88. The Dolphins out-gained nobody — 329 yards to 334 — but they kept the ball for 34:21, converted half their third downs, and still lost because they turned it over twice and failed on downs twice.
The Chiefs’ offense was a completion machine, not a drive machine. Eighteen first downs and 3-of-7 on third down is how you post 246 passing yards and still lose the clock by nine minutes. Mahomes was decisive in the short and intermediate game — Rice as the volume target, the football out on time — and the one deep-middle shot intended for Rice was intercepted by J. Rodriguez with help over the top. That is the only time Kansas City asked the vertical shot to carry a drive, and Miami took it. Everything else was efficiency without occupancy.
The run game did not re-create the Indianapolis tape. Walker’s 18/70 is honest work and a rushing touchdown, but it is not a downhill identity when you also turn it over on downs at the Miami 12 with extra eligibility in the game. Eighty-eight team rush yards against a Dolphins front that was supposed to be the soft part of the field means Bieniemy spent the afternoon asking Mahomes to win on 24 dropbacks of quality instead of 35 dropbacks of necessity. That works until the other club stops punting the football away.
Spagnuolo’s defense won the score and lost the down. Nick Bolton’s 11 tackles are a tell: Kansas City was tackling because Miami was on the field. The Dolphins posted 19 first downs, 8-of-16 on third down, and 119 rushing yards, and they still scored 10 because Drue Tranquill blew up a Willis keeper that became a fumble Kansas City challenged, because Miami turned it over on downs in the second quarter and again in the fourth, and because Karlaftis intercepted Willis with Chris Jones in the picture. That is complementary football by takeaway, not by first-down defense. A division opponent will try to keep the 119 and lose the gifts.
The finishing sequence was Chiefs football and 2025 football stacked on top of each other. A 34-yard field goal made it 17-10, an 11-yard touchdown made it 24-10 after the Karlaftis interception, and Harrison Butker then missed a 50-yarder wide left. Kelce’s traffic catch put the game on ice, per Arrowhead Pride, which is the closer this offense still has. The missed kick did not matter. The 25:39 of possession will matter on Sun Oct 4, 3:25 PM CT.
What held up
- Mahomes’ 20-of-24, 246-yard, two-touchdown efficiency and a 119.8 passer rating in a true road environment
- Explosive enough finishing: touchdowns of 10, 5, and 11 yards, plus Kelce’s traffic catch to ice it
- Rice as the chain-mover (7 for 88) when the run game stalled
- Two Miami turnovers — Willis fumble (Tranquill) and Karlaftis interception (Jones in the play) — plus two Dolphins failures on downs
- Spagnuolo’s unit holding Miami to 10 points and 210 net passing yards despite losing the clock
What broke
- Third-down offense at 3-of-7, which is how you post 334 yards and still sit for 34:21
- The ground game: 88 team rushing yards, Walker stuffed on downs at the Miami 12 with Nourzad eligible
- Mahomes’ deep-middle interception intended for Rice
- First-down and possession fights (18-19 first downs, 25:39 of clock)
- Run defense allowing 119 yards and 8-of-16 third downs to a Dolphins offense starting Malik Willis
- Butker’s 50-yard miss wide left, a leftover scar on an otherwise closed game
Mahomes can win ugly if the ball comes out on time
Twenty of 24 is a rhythm start, not a volume start. When Kansas City stayed in defined throws, Miami could not cover enough of the field. The Rodriguez interception on the deep middle to Rice is the exception that proves the rule: do not hunt explosives when the easy game is already paying.
Takeaways covered a defense that was on the field too long
Bolton leading the team with 11 tackles is production and a warning. Miami’s 34:21 and 8-of-16 third-down day should have been 20 points. Willis’ fumble and the Karlaftis interception are why it was 10. Spagnuolo cannot budget two opponent giveaways every week in the AFC West.
The run game did not travel
Walker’s touchdown keeps him in the A-gap conversation, but 70 yards on 18 carries and a stuffed extra-eligibility run at the 12 is not the Indianapolis identity. If Las Vegas loads the box, Bieniemy needs answers that are not another 24-pass, 88-rush split.
Where we stand
After the last kickoff: the work list, and the questions the building should be arguing.
3-0
The Chiefs are 3-0 with a 31-10, 33-30, and 24-10 scoring trail that looks like a playoff club on Sunday and like 2025 on the cut-up. The AFC West already has a gap if the Chargers’ start is as grim as the local wire says, but this roster has not yet proven it can occupy the football for four quarters against a division front.
What we need to work on
Walker’s 18/70 in Miami is not a failed back; it is a failed complementary script. Las Vegas will dare Kansas City to live in obvious pass so Maxx Crosby can hunt. Inside zone has to win early downs on Sun Oct 4, 3:25 PM CT or Mahomes will be asked to repeat 83 percent in a louder pocket.
You cannot take a 3-of-7 day on the road in the division and assume the other club will go 8-of-16 and still score 10. Mesh, boot, and the Rice/Kelce two-man game have to become automatic before the Raiders pin this offense in third-and-long.
Miami’s 34:21 was a blueprint, not a fluke. Spagnuolo can live with 19 first downs if the takeaways keep coming. He cannot live with it if Las Vegas finishes those drives. Winning first down on both sides of the ball is the entire week of practice.
Bolton’s 11 tackles mean the ball was getting to him. Against a division opponent that will run to keep Mahomes off the field, the edge has to set and the interior has to squeeze. The Willis keeper that became a fumble is the standard; the 119 yards are the problem.
What to think about
Arrowhead Pride’s rapid reaction said last year’s Chiefs almost came out in Miami. The staff has to decide whether the Colts overtime explosion or the Dolphins possession loss is the real tape — because the Raiders will prepare for the latter.
Twenty-of-24 tempts you to throw first. Crosby and a division front will punish that temptation. The debate is not Walker versus Mahomes; it is whether Bieniemy will keep calling the run after a stuffed extra-eligibility play at the 12.
Polymarket at 8.6 percent, ESPN FPI at 72.6 percent to beat Las Vegas, DraftKings at -5.5 / 45.5: the market likes Sunday’s favorite and still will not buy the long ticket. A division road game after losing the clock is exactly how that gap either closes or widens.
Conner was officially ruled out against the Dolphins, with Josh Simmons, Diego Pounds, Jared Wiley, Jack Pyburn, and Tyreke Smith also down. There is no Week 4 report on this wire. If the safety room is still thin, Spagnuolo’s call sheet tilts toward two-deep and simulated pressure instead of man-to-man heroics.
The next-game plan
How they match up, what Kansas City should script, and the keys that decide it.
Division road game, Sun Oct 4, 3:25 PM CT, CBS. Kansas City is a 5.5-point favorite on a 45.5 total with a 72.6 percent ESPN FPI nod — which is another way of saying the Raiders are live if they copy Miami’s occupancy plan and refuse to donate the football.
How they match up
Styles collide on the thing Miami already exposed: first down. Kansas City wants defined throws for Mahomes, Walker as a between-the-tackles hammer, and Spagnuolo creating negative plays with Chris Jones and George Karlaftis. Las Vegas, at home in the division, will try to win the clock, set Maxx Crosby loose on obvious pass, and make a 3-0 favorite play from behind the sticks. The leverage is simple: if the Chiefs run for more than 88 and stay out of third-and-long, Mahomes’ efficiency travels. If they don’t, Crosby becomes the game and 25:39 becomes the sequel.
Make Walker the first-down answer, not the footnote
Open in 12 personnel and force Las Vegas to tackle inside. Play-action boot only after the run fake is real. The extra-eligibility stuff at the Miami 12 cannot be the last memory this offensive line carries into a division trench.
Protect the edges so Mahomes can stay at 20-of-24
Crosby is the Raiders’ best player and the reason a 5.5-point road favorite can still lose. Chips, tight boots, and screens to Walker are how you keep Mahomes from having to be a hero. Josh Simmons was inactive in Miami — whoever is at tackle has to win the first two quarters without help arriving late.
Spagnuolo: two-deep early, simulated pressure later
Do not let Las Vegas dink its way to Miami’s 8-of-16. Cover-2 rallies Bolton to the ball; zone blitz with a Jones drop recreates the Karlaftis/Jones negative play without emptying the box against the run. Takeaways are the plan; 119 rush yards are the restriction.
Finish drives. Empty trips inside the 15 are how favorites become 5.5 instead of 10.
Kansas City already left points on the field with a turnover on downs at the 12 and a 50-yard miss. Kelce in traffic is still the closer. Use him before fourth down, not as a recovery throw.
- 1st-and-10, 12 personnel: under-center inside zone to Walker, tight end down, aim to start 2nd-and-5 instead of 2nd-and-9.
- 2nd-and-medium: play-action boot to Mahomes’ right, Kelce leak, Rice post-off — defined throw, no deep-middle hunt.
- 3rd-and-5: mesh with Rice as the primary rub winner and Walker as the checkdown; this is the 3-of-7 fix.
- Obvious pass / Crosby pin-the-ears: spacing screen to Walker, linemen in space, take the free yards Miami never gave you on the ground.
- 1st-and-10 defense: Cover-2 shell, Bolton and the WILL rally, corners squat — no shot over the top, no bounce to the edge.
- 3rd-and-7: Spagnuolo simulated pressure, Jones as the dropper or the looper, Karlaftis and a second-level rusher — hunt the Willis-style negative play without selling the run.
What the numbers say
The prediction for the next kickoff, the sportsbook line, and the live season markets — cited, not vibes.
Always looking ahead
Kansas City left Hard Rock Stadium unbeaten and unconvinced. The 24-10 final on Sun Sep 27, 12:00 PM CT was real — Patrick Mahomes was 20-of-24 for 246 yards and two scores, Kenneth Walker III punched in a rushing touchdown, and Steve Spagnuolo’s defense took the ball away twice — but Miami won the physics: 19 first downs to 18, 8-of-16 on third down to 3-of-7, 119 rush yards to 88, and 34:21 of possession to 25:39. That is the 2025 echo in a 2026 win, and it is the exact tape a division opponent will try to copy.
Arrowhead Pride called it what it looked like: last year’s Chiefs almost coming out, still good enough to grind a 24-10 result because Mahomes was ruthlessly efficient and the Dolphins handed over a Malik Willis fumble plus a George Karlaftis interception. Travis Kelce finished the afternoon with a highlight-reel touchdown in traffic. The problem is not the scoreboard. The problem is that Eric Bieniemy’s offense lived in a low-volume, high-completion box (334 total yards, 88 on the ground) and got stuffed on downs at the Miami 12 when Hunter Nourzad reported eligible and Walker was met in the hole.
Mahomes has already had to remind a young roster it cannot relax, which is the correct temperature for 3-0. Undefeated is a standing; it is not an identity. Identity is first down, third down, and the clock. Miami held all three and still scored 10 points. Las Vegas will not volunteer the same finishing errors.
Next is a division road game at the Raiders on Sun Oct 4, 3:25 PM CT on CBS, with ESPN FPI at 72.6 percent and DraftKings at Chiefs -5.5 on a 45.5 total. That number assumes Kansas City is the cleaner team. The Miami film assumes the Raiders can win if they run it, convert, and keep Mahomes on the sideline. Week 6’s Chargers visit is already being framed as an AFC West separator after Los Angeles’ nightmare start; none of that equity cashes if this trip turns into a possession sequel.
The X’s & O’s
Concepts drawn up on the board — what it is, why it works, and the coaching point.
Walker, one cut, no sequel at the 12
Situation 1st-and-10, opening script and every plus-run down vs. Las Vegas after only 88 rush yards in Miami
Walker went 18/70/1 against the Dolphins and still got buried on downs at the Miami 12 with Hunter Nourzad eligible. Las Vegas will load the box to get Maxx Crosby a third-and-long hunt. Inside zone is how Bieniemy reclaims first down so Mahomes is not asked to live on 24 perfect dropbacks again.
Coaching point Bieniemy: zone steps, one cut, no bounce into Crosby. Walker must press the heels of the guards and take the A or B gap that opens — the extra-eligibility stuff at the 12 was indecision, not a scheme loss. Interior OL: stay on double teams a count longer than Miami; the second-level linebacker is the tackle that ended drives.
Sell the run, move Mahomes, take the easy one
Situation 2nd-and-5 or 2nd-and-6 after a Walker zone gain, plus splits, Raiders DE crashing
Mahomes was 20-of-24 in Miami when the play was defined and the pocket had an answer. Boot puts him on the perimeter against a Raiders rush that will pin its ears back as a 5.5-point home underdog. Kelce is the first read; Rice occupies the deep third so the deep-middle INT to Rodriguez does not get rerun.
Coaching point Reid/Bieniemy: the fake has to hold Crosby or the contain end. Mahomes hitch and throw — do not outrun the launching point and do not hunt the shot. Kelce: leak to 8 yards vs zone, run through the hook vs man. Rice: sell the post off so the safety cannot drive the boot.
Under-Center Play-Action Boot
Fix 3-of-7 without the hero ball
Situation 3rd-and-5, 11 personnel, the down that quietly lost the clock in Miami
Kansas City went 3-of-7 on third down and still won 24-10 because Miami donated the football. Las Vegas will not. Rice’s 7/88 is the man-beater; mesh creates the rub that turns third-and-5 into a catch at 7. This is also how you avoid the deep-middle shot to Rice that Rodriguez took.
Coaching point Rice and the Z: sell the collision, don’t slip, don’t spin. Mahomes: first open crosser, then Walker in the checkdown — no late deep look. Kelce or the F: corner/sit opposite the mesh to punish a robber. Young roster, no relax: this is the conversion, not the highlight.
Under-Center Play-Action Boot
Easy offense when Crosby wins a down
Situation 2nd-and-9 or 3rd-and-long after a Raiders edge win; 11 personnel, Crosby pinned
Miami held the ball 34:21 because Kansas City could not stay on the field. A screen to Walker punishes an aggressive Raiders rush, gets the offensive line in space, and is the only honest way to create run yards if the inside zone is still stuck at 3.9 a carry. It also protects whoever is at tackle after Simmons sat in Week 3.
Coaching point Guards and backside tackle: get to the second level now, do not linger in a pass set. Walker: catch, north-south, do not dance into Crosby’s pursuit. Rice: stalk the nickel. Mahomes: three-step sell, ball out — this is the anti-hero throw the young team was just reminded to love.
What we’re watching
Mahomes was a surgeon. He was not a clock.
Twenty-of-24 for 246, two touchdowns, one pick, and a 119.8 rating is elite efficiency on the road. It is also only 24 dropbacks. If Las Vegas copies Miami’s 34:21, he will need 35 attempts or a run game that actually exists.
Walker’s touchdown does not erase 88 yards.
Eighteen carries, 70 yards, one score — honest, unfinished. The stuffed extra-eligibility run at the Miami 12 is the clip Bieniemy has to kill before Crosby sees it. Indianapolis’ 117 is still the standard, not the Miami split.
Kelce remains the closer.
Arrowhead Pride’s recap put the game on ice with Kelce’s highlight-reel catch in traffic. That is still the highest-leverage throw in this offense. Use it to finish drives against Las Vegas, not to recover them.
Bolton’s 11 tackles are a warning light.
Production, yes. Also proof Miami lived in his lap for 34:21. Against a division run plan he has to play downhill on first down so those tackles happen at the 4-yard gain, not the 8.
The Chargers gap is real only if this trip cashes.
Arrowhead Addict notes Los Angeles is already three games behind with a brutal stretch before the Week 6 meeting. That edge dies on contact if Kansas City donates a division road game after losing the clock in Miami.
Mahomes already told the young ones not to exhale.
Arrowhead Pride’s headline is the week’s actual scouting report. 3-0 with a 2025 possession tape is how young rosters get surprised in Las Vegas. The reminder is the assignment.
Matchups that decide it
Chiefs OT / chip help vs. Maxx Crosby
Opponent edgeCrosby is the best reason a 5.5-point road favorite can lose. Kansas City must boot, screen, and chip or Mahomes’ 20-of-24 becomes a scramble drill.
Mahomes / Rice / Kelce vs. Raiders coverage
Chiefs edgeMiami could not cover the defined throws. The Rodriguez INT was the only deep-middle miss. Keep the ball on time and this is still Kansas City’s unit.
Walker + interior OL vs. Raiders front
EvenThe Colts tape said yes; the Dolphins tape said 88 yards and a stuff at the 12. Until Walker wins first down, this is a push and Crosby’s down.
Jones / Karlaftis / Spagnuolo vs. Raiders pass protection
Chiefs edgeThe Dolphins still only scored 10 because of a fumble and a Karlaftis INT with Jones in the picture. That pass-rush leverage travels if Kansas City does not empty the box.
Bolton and the run fits vs. Raiders ground game
EvenKansas City won the score and lost the clock. If the Raiders commit to the run on first down, Bolton has to play the 4-yard gain, not the tackle-after-the-explosion.
Coaching & adjustments
Andy Reid vs. a 3-0 trap in the division
Reid’s call sheet has to look like a team that just lost the clock, not a team that just won by 14. Early 12 personnel and boot are how you keep Maxx Crosby from dictating a 5.5-point road favorite.
Eric Bieniemy’s downhill identity is on the table
Indianapolis was 117 on the ground; Miami was 88 and a stuff at the 12. Bieniemy either re-installs inside zone as a first-down answer this week or he is choosing to live in Mahomes’ 20-of-24 efficiency against a better pass rush.
Steve Spagnuolo: 10 points is not the same as a stop
Miami’s 19 first downs, 8-of-16, and 34:21 are the film. Cover-2 to rally and zone blitz to steal a throw are the answers. Budgeting two takeaways every week is how 2025 snuck back onto the 2026 tape.
Mahomes as the veteran in a young room
Arrowhead Pride’s report that he reminded the roster it cannot relax is the leadership note for a 3-0 club that just posted a 2025 possession split. The next test is whether that message shows up on first down in Las Vegas, not in a postgame quote.
The report
- Chamarri Conner Out (Week 3)
Officially ruled out vs. Miami; no Week 4 report on this wire. Safety math is the open item for Spagnuolo’s two-deep week.
Source: Arrowhead Pride - Josh Simmons Out (Week 3)
Inactive at tackle against the Dolphins, grouped with Diego Pounds. Relevant to the Crosby protection plan until a new report lands.
Source: Arrowhead Pride - Jared Wiley Out (Week 3)
Tight end inactive in Miami; Kelce’s closer role was already the plan, but 12-personnel depth was thinner on the road.
Source: Arrowhead Pride - Jack Pyburn Out (Week 3)
Defensive end inactive vs. Miami along with Tyreke Smith, who had been elevated. Pass-rush rotation behind Jones/Karlaftis was already the pre-Miami question.
Source: Arrowhead Pride
Personnel
- Week 3 practice-squad elevations
Linebacker Cole Christiansen and defensive end Tyreke Smith were elevated for Miami; Smith still landed on the inactive list. That is a thin edge/linebacker week heading into a division run game.
- Tackle and safety availability
Simmons, Pounds, and Conner sitting in Week 3 is the protection-and-shell story for Las Vegas. Until a fresh report, game-plan as if Crosby gets a run at a backup and Spagnuolo prefers two-deep.
- Young roster, veteran quarterback
Mahomes reminding the group it cannot relax is the personnel note that actually travels. 3-0 with a 25:39 possession day is how young teams walk into a division building and donate first down.
Debates for the comments
- Did Miami expose last year’s Chiefs, or did two Dolphins giveaways just hide a 3-0 team that is still finding itself?
- If Walker is going to get 18 carries, how many of them have to win first down before Bieniemy is allowed to live in 20-of-24 Mahomes?
- Is Polymarket’s 8.6 percent Super Bowl price the correct temperature for a club that wins 24-10 while losing the clock?
- Can Spagnuolo keep posting 10-point nights if the takeaways dry up and the opponent runs for 119?
- Should Kansas City game-plan Las Vegas as if Simmons and Conner are still down, or is that overreacting to one inactive list?
This week’s episode rundown
A ready-to-shoot run-of-show for the weekly video — segment, timing, and talk track.
Twenty-of-24. Two Miami giveaways. Nine extra minutes that were not ours. We are 3-0, and the Raiders just got the occupancy film.
Walk the 24-10: Mahomes’ defined throws, Rice 7/88, Walker 18/70 and the stuff at the 12, Bolton’s 11 tackles, the Willis fumble, the Karlaftis INT. Credit Miami for 19 first downs, 8-of-16, 119 rush, 34:21. Do not call it a night game — it was Sun Sep 27, 12:00 PM CT, midday, and the clock still looked like 2025.
AFC West gap vs. the Chargers’ nightmare start, Mahomes telling a young team not to relax, 8.6 percent Super Bowl money vs. 72.6 percent to win in Las Vegas. What to fix: first down, third down, the run, the clock.
Sun Oct 4, 3:25 PM CT, CBS, Chiefs -5.5 / 45.5. Crosby as the edge, Walker as the must, Spagnuolo’s two-deep and simulated pressure as the answer to a copycat occupancy plan. Honest edges: they can win if we live in obvious pass.
Inside zone, boot, mesh, Walker screen, Cover-2, zone blitz. Name the players. Tie every card to Miami’s 88 rush yards and 3-of-7.
ESPN FPI 72.6, DraftKings -5.5 / 45.5, Polymarket 8.6. Leave the room with one question: can this 3-0 team occupy the football in a division building?

ESPN FPI gives Kansas City a 75.0 percent nod and DraftKings lays KC -6.5 on a 46.5 total, but Polymarket still prices the Chiefs at 7.8 percent to win the Super Bowl and 12.5 percent to win the AFC — a 1-0 sample, not a coronation.

Model/market read: the model gives KC 59.6%; Vegas has it KC -2.5; Polymarket prices the Chiefs at 4.9% to win it all.
Read this edition → - Week 1 Jones is cleared. Simmons is not. The red zone still owes a touchdown.
ESPN FPI posts Kansas City at 58.0 percent and DraftKings hangs a 2.5-point home number on a 43.5 total, but Polymarket’s 5.7 percent Super Bowl ticket and 10.0 percent AFC ticket still price a 6-11 hangover until Mahomes finishes drives without Simmons or Conner.

ESPN FPI sits Kansas City at 58.9 percent and DraftKings lays 2.5 at a 43.5 total, but Polymarket’s 6.2 percent Super Bowl ticket and 9.5 percent AFC ticket still price a 6-11 hangover until the red zone and the blind side survive Sean Payton.

ESPN FPI posts Kansas City at 57.8 percent and DraftKings hangs a short 2.5-point home number on a 43.5 total, but a 6.2 percent championship price on Polymarket is a dare: finish the Seattle run tape in the red zone and keep Mahomes clean when Payton tests the left edge.
Read this edition → - Week 1 Walker can run it. Simmons may not block it. Payton will test both.
A 58.3 percent FPI nod and a 2.5-point DraftKings favorite say Arrowhead still matters, but a 43.5 total and a 6.2 percent championship price say this roster has to prove the run tape travels — and that the left side holds without Simmons.

The FPI nod and the home field-goal favorite are a vote for Arrowhead and the run tape, not for a finished roster — Norman-Lott on PUP and two mid-cutdown tackles mean Week 1 is a stress test.
Read this edition → - Training Camp A 9–9 finale, two borrowed tackles, and 17 days to make the 53 look like a plan
DraftKings has Kansas City -3 at home and ESPN FPI gives them a 59.4 percent Week 1 nod, but that number only cashes if a patched tackle room and a PUP’d interior can keep a 155-yard run identity alive against Denver.

If the secondary settles and the run game is real, Kansas City can win early while Mahomes ramps.
